Home > Peru & The Inca Trail > Salineras de MarasSalineras de MarasThe Salineras de Maras are about 10km off the road to Maras on a dirt road. The Incas carved these are pools into the mountainside to collect salt from the salt spring in a nearby mountain. The salt water is diverted into hundreds of shallow pools, which are then sealed off. The water evaporates and the salt is left in the pools. Each pool is owned by a separate family, who collects the salt to sell. |
